This is a great book!
This book is awsome! You will not believe what kind of things it tells you until you get it. It tells you everything from how to get peanut butter out of your hair to how to get a dishwasher smelling fresh again. My mother had the "Mary Ellen's Best of Helpful Hints" book for many years, and I would always call her to find out how to do things from the book, and so I decided that it was time to get myself one. This book is so good! You have to get one!

The Middling Sorts: Explorations in the History of the American Middle Class
Published in Paperback by Routledge (01 December, 2000)

Excellent Source
If you are looking for a handbook on current research and thinking on the middle class in America this is it. It covers all the key issues in the field and then spins them out in new directions. The essays by Sven Beckert, Debby Applegate, Bruce Laurie and Joyce Appleby stand out as especially valuable, with provocative insights which extend well beyond their specific subject matter.

Moose Meat and Wild Rice
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (June, 1987)
Author: Basil H. Johnston
Average review score:

A treasure-trove of hilarity...
Basil Johnston is a Canadian National Treasure, he really is. The man is a master story-teller, even in printed form.

"Moose Meat and Wild Rice" is a collection of true stories taken from the recollections of the Moose Meat Point Indian Reserve. The stories are fresh, good-natured and full of wonderful insight into the life and living of the Natives' collective soul.

The adventure in humour abounds in this tome - from errant and misguided honey-gathering friends, to a young brave out to prove his bravery by taking on the dark forces of an abandoned house, to some memories of Johnston's very own.

One of my favourite stories, apart from the honey-gathering fiasco, was that of the war-vet friends, Meegis and Konauss, looking to wet their palates. But then there's also the wedding tale, and the bologna=meat/sawdust=wood account. Oh wait, there's the on-ice privys, and the head-light bashing Yellow Cloud.

Well, suffice to say, there are a number of wonderful recountings that will have you laughing out loud. As Mr. Johnston himself said of the stories, "If the accounts sometimes appear to be far-fetched and even implausible, it is simply because human beings very often act and conduct their affairs and those of others in absurd manner." Amen to that, Mr. Johnston. And it's a good thing, too, because if we humans didn't act so absurdly we'd be robbed of your incredible story-telling gift.

A big bravo to this title. Grab a copy, settle in, and enjoy the story-teller at his finest.

Mustard Seed of Magic

Author: Norma Johnston
Average review score:

You'll never forget it.
This series starts with The Keeping Days, there are 5 books in this series. I read these books over 20 years ago (when I was 14) and they are still my favorite books. I wish that I could find all of the books in print to give to my two daughters. Intelligent, yet romantic look at a family in 1920's Yonkers. It is a series that you will cherish forever, never want to give away, and read again and again.

My Golden Age of Singing (Opera Biography Series, No. 10)
Published in Hardcover by Amadeus Pr (October, 1998)
Authors: Frieda Hempel, William R. Moran, and Elizabeth Johnston
Average review score:

an unusually readable autobiography of a superb soprano
Hempel was, as her recordings clearly show, one of the century's finest sopranos. It also turns out she was one of its finest autobiographers as well. The book was dictated and checked by the soprano before her death in 1955, shortly after which the German edition appeared and for which she wrote the prefact two days before her death. Remarkably, an English version was written prior to the German version but, for reasons known only to Hemple, was never published. Elizabeth Johnston, the diva's friend, deserves our thanks for her efforts on behalf of the English version.

What makes this book so refreshing, aside from the lack of a ghostwriter, is its highly readible style and worthwhile content. Those, like myself, who are tired of the vacuous, vapid "I sang here", "I sang there" litany will find Hempel a candid writer and one who can write modestly yet entertainingly of her long career that included singing with Caruso and under the baton of Toscanini. Had she not been a remarkable soprano, she would have been an equally fine writer.

The book is highly recommendable to vocal aficianados and anyone who cares to meet a fascinating, great lady.

My Mexico / México mío
Published in Paperback by Paper Star (February, 1999)
Authors: Tony Johnston and F. John Sierra
Average review score:

A Wonderful Collection of Poems about Mexico
The book My Mexico - Mio Mexico is an interesting collection of poems about life in Mexico that reaches a broad spectrum of younger readers. As a middle school teacher of Spanish, these poems are excellent examples of the differing views of Mexico - from the lament for the Aztecs in "Donde Estan?" to the poem "Soy Cucuracha" which is humorous and sure to make your students think and laugh! I would highly recommend this book to any Spanish or ESL teacher who desires to integrate culture and poetry into his or her lessons! My students have thoroughly enjoyed the poems we have studied from this book! Bravo y bien hecho!

New England Harbors

Authors: Clyde H. Smith and Waldo Johnston
Average review score:

Fantastic photography that captures New England's beauty
If you can get your hands on a copy of this book you will be very impressed with the photography. Clyde shows how you only need to be at the right place at the right time to get a great photo. There are no special camera tricks here just incredible photos. I had a chance to meet Clyde, that's how I got a copy of this book. All his books are out of print and he is retired, but if you get a chance to buy any of his books you won't be disappointed. I was also able to get a copy of his book "Alaska" and that is worth any price. These are the ultimate in coffee table books.
